Recently, we converted our screened porch to a sunroom and I couldn’t be happier with the results! Overall, the process was fairly simple and so worth it. We’ve now used the sunroom in so many ways! I’m sharing all of the how-tos and reasons why it just made sense!
Why we made the decision to convert from screened porch to sunroom
We made the decision to convert our screen covered porch into a sunroom for a few different reasons. The first was the ability to gain extra living space in our home -resulting in increased value. We gained 250 sq ft. of livable space and around $50K in value. Additionally, with our growing family, we wanted additional space to all spread out.
Cost-wise, it just made sense. We could either refinish the attic/upstairs space or convert the screened porch into the sunroom. It was overall an easy decision – the sunroom was 1/7 the cost!
We also considered the pros and cons of having the screened porch at the time. While we did love having an outdoor area that kept the bugs away, we were only able to use porch seasonally because of weather extremities in my state. We have hot, hot summers and cold winters. We also were tired of the upkeep and felt like we were spending too much time cleaning dust, dirt, and pollen. With the sunroom, we can use the space year-round, no matter the temperature, and still have a great view!
The Process of Converting the screened porch to sunroom
The overall process of converting the screened porch to a sunroom was fairly simple!
To start, we kept the hard finishes. It was easier that way, plus I didn’t really mind keeping those in tact. We also kept the original tile for a sleek look, as I knew it would be cohesive with my design plan!
One of our first purchases was an indoor ceiling fan and the limewash for the brick. We painted using a Romabio limewish, which did an amazing job at brightening the room!
Next, we replaced screens with floor to ceiling windows. Luckily the existing frame was well-built so there was no extra cost in this area. We used a local window company for the new windows. They were able to measure the existing spaces and custom build the floor to ceiling windows. We chose to make the windows on each end functional to they could be opened and closed. The rest of the windows stationary, saving money.
Heat and air was brought into existing unit making it another cost effective choice.
Finally, modern glass & brass barn door was added to create a seamless transition from breakfast nook to sunroom! I’m sharing all of the hardware for the barn door here!
New Sunroom: From Outdoor to Indoor Living
The new sunroom space quickly became our families’ favorite room. The floor to ceiling windows create a bright and airy light-filled space, so we love to spend time in there day and night.
It was so important to me to create a cozy, cheerful room that everyone would feel at home in. The first piece of furniture I purchased was the York Pottery Barn Couch. I knew this space would be heavily used so performance fabric was a must! From there, the room bloomed! I added 2 leather chairs, a large black leather ottoman, a washable rug, and a media console.
Of course, the room needed little things here and there. I added an end table, lamp, and more spring decor – all linked here!
Overall, we are so in love with this new sunroom. We have countless uses for it: movie nights, cozying up with a book, listening to music, or endless conversations with family and friends.
